Dr. Lukens’ Definition
Success is something most people are busy chasing their whole life. If you're someone who is trying to obtain success and are frustrated with where you're at... You'll be surprised to find that it's probably because you're looking at your goals from the wrong angle. It’s likely that you assume your goals are desire-based. Your goals are what you truly want. However, the motivation to achieve certain goals, as it's understood by Dr. Lukens, is almost always rooted in the pursuit of pain-control or pain-avoidance, and this pain focused drive lies beneath even the most positive sounding and universally desirable goals.
The possible shame, for many people, is the primary “pain management” drive as they believe they won’t “measure up” or be well thought of in a success-obsessed “materialistic” society. There are always a multitude of these sorts of “un-obvious” pain points that are specific to you, getting you to create positive sounding goals that are nonetheless intentionally designed to compensate for or control something potentially painful. Most people are clueless or only dimly aware of the influence of these pain points. That’s because they can only be found on the dark side of your motivational moon. They live in our “blindspots.”
